After two years of extensive engineering, impact studies and thorough work preparation, the first post of the state-of-the-art Offshore Supply Base in Commewijne on the former Suzannasdaal plantation, close to the estuary, was a fact on 24 August. The President of the Republic of Suriname, His Excellency Chandrikapersad Santokhi, gave the official starting signal on this occasion.
Among the guests were the ministers the District Commissioner of Commewijne, Mr. Mohamedsafik Radjab, and members of the National Assembly of Suriname and leading figures of the public and Oil & Gas private sector.
The initiators FIRM Engineering, HJ De Vries Project Development and DP World are setting up this extensive 50-hectare Offshore Support Base, which will provide specialized, integrated end-to-end solutions to the Oil & Gas Industry in the Guyana-Suriname basin. The Suzannasdaal Shorebase is characterized by a 500-metre quay with eight-and-a-half (8.5) meters of guaranteed depth at low water, enabling safe Offshore Supply Vessel operations at all times. There are plenty of opportunities for expansion due to the 1 km long waterfront and 330 hectares of estate. Due to the favorable location, approximately 200 km from the oil discoveries, a rapid supply to and from the planned offshore drilling platforms is possible. Impact studies carried out have yielded positive results for the projected developments at this site in terms of social and environmental impacts. The project is expected to create interesting development opportunities for the Commewijne district, while the spin-off can also positively influence Paramaribo and other districts.
The completion of the first phase of this prestigious project is set for the end of quarter two (2) of 2023, after which the first operations can take place. The arrival of this private Shore base is expected to have a special impact on local content, including attracting businesses to Suriname, stimulating private sector growth and creating a wide range of sustainable employment opportunities.
