DP World Carbon Inset Programme Trial

ABOUT THE CARBON INSET PROGRAMME

DP World UK are launching an innovative Carbon Inset Programme Trial, providing importers into the UK the ability to reduce hard to abate Scope 3 carbon emissions from their containerised supply chains.

This initiative will run for an initial six months from 1st January 2025. Registered importers moving cargo through DP World UK ports at Southampton and London Gateway will earn a 50 kg CO₂e inset certificate per import laden container.

REDUCING SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS

Certificates can be used by customers to demonstrate improvements in the carbon intensity of marine fuel consumption in their supply chain. The 50 kg CO₂e saving was chosen based on import laden container volume, emissions from vessels moored alongside during container operations at our UK terminals and the cost of implementing lower carbon fuel on the Unifeeder network.

The inset credits are generated by the injection of incrementally lower carbon fuel to container ships on the Northern European network of Unifeeder, a subsidiary of DP World.

If 50% of import volume participates in the trial at DP World’s UK ports, we estimate that it will replace over 11,000 tonnes of traditional fossil fuel with lower carbon marine fuels within the global shipping industry, equivalent to the reduction of 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The carbon insets in this trial are generated by Unifeeder’s GreenBox platform. GreenBox records the deployment of incremental lower carbon fuel usage in Unifeeder’s Northern European container vessel network, and generates tokens for each ton of carbon saved via the independent 123Carbon platform.

Inset credits are generated according to the Smart Freight Centre methodology, and independently certified by Bureau Veritas.

By registering in the Carbon Inset Programme Trial, customers will automatically receive independently certified carbon inset credits from DP World at no additional cost. Funds generated from the existing Energy Transition Contribution will enable this trial.

WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE

The carbon inset credits, managed on the 123Carbon platform, will be directly assigned to the registered import cargo owner.

As the carbon inset credits will be retired prior to issue, confirming the emission reduction has been realised, the certificates cannot be transferred or resold.

Certificates will be issued to customers on a quarterly basis. To receive these free credits and participate in the programme, we recommend organisations register by 31st December 2024.

FAQs

Registration is open from 6th December 2024 to 30th June 2025. However, we encourage you to register by 31st December 2024.
Yes, the trial applies to import laden containers in both of our UK Ports.
No, you will only be required to register once.
The 6-month trial will run from 1st January 2025 to 30th June 2025. All customers who have registered for the initiative will be eligible to receive the inset certificates dependant on volume of import laden containers during the 6-month trial.
Customers that do not register for initiative will not be eligible to receive any carbon inset certificates from this trial.
The initiative applies to all import laden container volumes from 1st January 2025 to 30th June 2025 for those that have registered. Registrations made after 30th June 2025 will not be eligible for the initiative.
You will receive your unique certificate via email as a PDF attachment from [email protected]
Each import laden container will be eligible for 50kgCO2e.
The 50kgCO2e saving per import laden container amount was chosen following a review of the number of import laden containers at our UK terminals, emissions from vessels moored alongside our UK terminal during container operations, and the cost of implementing lower carbon fuel on the Unifeeder network.
The value of carbon inset certificates varies and is subject to supply and demand fluctuations on global carbon markets.
Carbon insets will be issued quarterly – the first round is planned for April 2025, and second round for July 2025.
Carbon insets are valid for 2 calendar years from the year of generation. E.g. Insets issued in 2025 will be valid until the end of 2027.
Each carbon insetting intervention, and the estimated reductions in emissions, has been independently verified by a recognised third party (Bureau Veritas) – more information is available on each certificate issued. The carbon inset is managed on the Unifeeder GreenBox solution which uses the 123Carbon Platform to make every certificate unique and traceable.
Unifeeder’s GreenBox is a carbon insetting solution to decarbonise the seaborne sections of their supply chains. GreenBox tracks shipments made aboard their marine services using alternative, low emission fuels, and generates tokens for each kg of carbon saved. GreenBox uses the transparent and externally verified 123 Carbon Platform. For more information, see the GreenBox and 123Carbon websites.
Carbon inset certificates will be funded by the Energy Transition Contribution, an existing charge on all import-laden containers in our ports.
Scope 3 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions that result from an organisation’s activities from assets not owned or controlled by the organisation. These are emissions upstream and downstream in their supply chain.
For Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCO) there will be Scope 3 emissions associated from the transport of their goods which are generated from assets not owned or controlled by the organisation e.g. container vessel emissions. This trial is assisting BCO’s with reducing their Scope 3 emissions from their supply chain.
Carbon inset certificates represent the CO2e reduced by carbon insetting, an investment made in a company’s value chain to reduce emissions. This trial generates inset certificates by funding the use of more expensive low carbon fuels in Unifeeder container vessels. This is in partnership with Unifeeder’s already established GreenBox carbon insetting solution. These certificates can then be used to show a Scope 3 reduction for DP World UK port customers.
DP World hopes to assist our customers in reducing emissions across their supply chain and increase awareness of Scope 3 emissions. The 50kg CO2e level per import laden container is a significant contribution to the emissions by container vessels alongside DP World UK ports and can be used to address Scope 3 emissions across customers supply chains.
Carbon insets can be used in your sustainability reporting, using the certificate as evidence of reduction in a company’s Scope 3 reporting from marine fuel consumption. The inset certificate will be retired on the 123Carbon platform prior to issue, confirming that the emission reduction has been realised.
Carbon insets can be used in certain sustainability reporting to represent a legitimate reduction in emissions within a company’s value chain and are already recognised by regulation such as the EU’s CSRD.
No, the carbon inset will be retired prior to issue so you will not be allowed to transfer or sell your certificate to avoid the risk of double counting carbon reductions. Your certificate will be issued in the Company’s registered name that appears on Companies House.
DP World will verify the ownership of containers using the provided EORI number. When registering for this trial, you give permission for us to use your EORI number for this purpose – more information is available in the Terms & Conditions.
An Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI number) is a European Union registration and identification number for businesses which undertake the import or export of goods into or out of the EU. Any business or individual established in the EU (an economic operator) needs to obtain an EORI number from their national customs authority before commencing customs activities in the EU. An economic operator established outside the EU needs to be assigned an EORI number if it intends to lodge a customs declaration, an Entry or an Exit Summary Declaration.
An EORI number is required to link your container to your company. Without it, we wouldn’t know which containers qualify for the initiative. We will validate your EORI number online.
The 6-month trial is intended to scope interest in the initiative.
A decision will be made after the 6-month trial is complete.
In its trial period, this initiative only offers carbon insets per import laden container without the option to purchase more. The option to purchase additional carbon insets is something we will consider in the future if this trial is successful.
Carbon insets are produced on containerships operated by Unifeeder through the utilisation of biofuels. The biofuels employed are in compliance with the ISCC-EU certification and are classified as second-generation as per Annex 9a of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II).
