Water is crucial for life on Earth and vital for our well-being. Businesses, including ours, can play a significant role in changing how water is used and ensuring its ecosystems are safeguarded through a more holistic approach to water management in the face of climate change.

DP World's water initiatives strongly align with UN SDGs 6 and 14
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
We are committed to enhancing global prosperity by prioritising freshwater sustainability, directly supporting UN SDG Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Through initiatives aimed at ensuring equitable access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) systems, we address water-related challenges that threaten community stability and health, focusing on building resilience and capacity in local communities, especially in water-scarce regions.

SDG 14: Life Below Water
As leaders in the Sustainable Blue Economy, we aim to align closely with UN SDG goal 14 to conserve and use the ocean, seas, and marine resources sustainably. We are committed to reducing operational impacts on the ocean and boosting marine conservation biodiversity through restoration and protection. By focusing on data-driven solutions and partnerships, we aim to advance climate action and resilience to contribute to a thriving, sustainable ocean.

KEY INSIGHTS
The annual economic value of water and freshwater ecosystems is estimated to be US$58 trillion – equivalent to 60% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (World Wildlife Fund, 2023)
Only 7% of all MPAs are located within one kilometre of the world’s urban centres. The conventional placement of MPAs rarely address the protection of urban waters against cumulative human impacts from cities.
As per the United Nations, approximately 40% of global jobs are linked to water-dependent sectors like agriculture, fishing, and tourism (UN Water, 2016).
CASE STUDIES
Preserving Puná Island's Mangroves For Water Sustainability
Nestled off Ecuador's coastline, Puná Island holds a secret vital to our planet's water sustainability: mangroves. These ecosystems play a pivotal role in safeguarding water resources, biodiversity, and climate resilience. We’ve been working closely with our partner, the CALISUR Foundation, to plant mangroves seedlings as a nature-based solution for combatting climate change.
Preserving Estuary Ecosystems – A Source-To-Sea Commitment
Just a stone’s throw away from DP World Antwerp Gateway, we’ve partnered with Natuurpunt to put a Source-To-Sea approach in practice to safeguard and restore a precious waterway from plastic pollution.
Transforming Lives In Mozambique – A Tale Of Clean Water And Empowerment
We’re working with WaterAid in Niassa Province in Mozambique to to improve WASH facilities in three healthcare centres and across their surrounding communities. By constructing solar panel water provision systems, we will be improving water access infrastructure, and facilitating clean, accessible water supply that helps to safeguard health and hygiene standards.
