In the 1970s, as a part of Prime Minister’s program for economic reforms it was decided to establish a purpose-built specialized port facility for bulk handling of massive imports, and thus Port Qasim came into being. The port encompasses a total area of 12,000 acres and its strategic position places it in close proximity to major shipping routes. Port Qasim is well connected to the transportation infrastructure of the country. It is at distance of 15 km from the national highway, providing direct access to the hinterland through road. A further 14 km of railway track inside the terminal links it to the national railway network through 6 railway tracks.

The Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT) was conceptualized in the early nineties, in response to a tender that was floated by the Government of Pakistan, for the construction and operation of what would be the country very first Dedicated International Container Terminal, to be built at Port Muhammad Bin Qasim on a build/own/operate basis. The concession was awarded to the P&O Ports group in 1995 for a period of 30 years and the terminal commenced operations on August 10, 1997. In 2006, when P&O Ports was bought over by DP World globally, QICT was added to the DP World portfolio in Subcontinent Region. QICT, today also known as DP World Karachi is Pakistan leading container terminal operator handling a majority of the country trade.

DP World Karachi is the only container terminal in Pakistan which employs its own private labour which in turn results in a huge saving for our shipping lines customers. It also has the distinction of being the first Pakistani Company to receive the certification of Security (ISO 28000), CT-Pat compliance and the Information Security Management BS7799 replaced with globally recognized standard of ISO 27001. Since May 2008, DP World Karachi has been managing an IC3 Programme, which is part of the Safe Freight Initiative under US Customs and Border Protection, with the aim of 100% scanning of container prior to entering US ports. This facility is not available anywhere else in Pakistan, and recently the US Govt. has announced that the IC3 programme run with DP World Karachi will be the only SFI in Pakistan.
