DP World Banana Port developing state of the art infrastructure for the DRC
Date: 09/06/2023
Kinshasa, DRC, 21 April 2023: DP World and the Government of the DRC are collaborating to develop the country’s first deepwater port, which will give it greater independence in trade.
Located at Banana in the province of Kongo Central on the country's Atlantic coast, the port represents a major investment in the DRC’s infrastructure, providing logistical independence and ensuring sovereignty over its foreign trade.
Under the first phase of development, the Banana Port will be equipped with a 600m long quay with a draft of 18m capable of accommodating the largest vessels currently in operation. It will have a handling capacity of 450,000 TEU (6m standard containers) per year with a storage area of 30 hectares. Three additional construction phases will follow and gradually increase the port's capacity.
Numerous companies will be involved in its construction, including many local companies, creating significant numbers of direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local economy. The port will offer an efficient service with time savings for shipping companies, as well as importers and exporters.
Banana Port will also be connected to a network of additional infrastructure, including a free zone to promote investment and further job creation and multimodal logistics infrastructure linking it with Kinshasa via Boma and Matadi.
As the single maritime window for all containerized goods transported by sea in the DRC. This centralization, combined with the electronic one-stop-shop already in place, will enable the Congolese government to simplify its procedures while having better visibility on its foreign trade.
With the port of Banana, the DRC will have state-of-the-art, integrated logistics infrastructure that will serve the country's development and impact millions of Congolese for years to come.
